New Territories of Foodscapes International Scientific Conference in Warsaw
New Territories of Foodscapes
Urban-Rural Landscapes and Feeding Territories
09-10 October 2026
Warsaw: ZODIAK Warsaw Architecture Pavilion, MOST Urban Cooperative Farm
OVERVIEW
The conference focuses on how contemporary cities are “fed” – spatially, politically and imaginatively. It asks how we can move from a city geared towards consumption to a city-as-organism, in which urban form, infrastructure and public policies recognise food as a key dimension of spatial planning.
The Warsaw edition of the “New Territories of Foodscapes” conference, “Urban-Rural Landscapes and Feeding Territories”, develops the theme of urban–rural hybrids. It explores how these visions translate today into concrete processes: the urbanisation of the countryside, the logic of metropolitan regions absorbing agricultural land, but also the “ruralisation” of the city – the return of fields, orchards and gardens into urbanised space.
“New Territories of Foodscapes” is intended as a meeting place for researchers, planners, artists, activists, and practitioners who see food as more than an agribusiness-driven economic sector – rather as a lens through which to trace transformations in urban–rural relations, environmental crises, and the possibilities of designing more just, resilient and productive urban landscapes. The conference aims not only to offer a diagnosis, but also to assemble a repertoire of scenarios and tools: from critical analyses of urban policies to bold visions of the future feeding zones of cities.
We warmly invite researchers working on food systems, urban studies, and socio-environmental relations, as well as farmers, urban gardeners, and representatives of civil society organisations engaged in food policy, climate action, environmental issues, and urban movements to actively participate in the conference. We also encourage artists working in the field of socially engaged art, activists, practitioners, and public officials and decision-makers to join the discussion. Our aim is for the conference to become a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and ideas, while also fostering long-term, cross-sectoral collaborations.
We welcome submissions in the following formats:
– presentations of research findings;
– presentations of planning, urban design, architectural, and landscape projects;
– presentations of artistic, performative, and activist practices.
The deadline for submissions is 12 July 2026. Abstracts should be submitted via the online application form: https://forms.gle/EcLeba8yQFq8VKNi9
Submissions will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee.
The conference is also open to non-presenting participants.
The NEW TERRITORIES OF FOODSCAPES WARSAW conference forms part of the research project Urban Feeding Zone: Professions of the Future at the Interface of City and Countryside, carried out by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS–SGGW).
“New Territories of Foodscapes” is an international conference organised in two complementary editions: the Warsaw edition (9–10 October 2026) and the Brussels edition (30 October 2026).
The conference accompanies the Brussels exhibition The Belly of the City, curated by Aleksandra Wasilkowska and organised by the National Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning (NIAiU).
The conference is also accompanied by a special issue of Autoportret magazine dedicated to the theme of Foodscapes, bringing together critical perspectives on food, landscape, architecture and urbanism.
