BUISSNESS DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Revitalization and Architecture conducts interdisciplinary research and teaching in the field of civil engineering and transport. Among the main scientific interests of employees, three main areas can be mentioned: environmental geotechnics and reclamation, geodesy and cartography, as well as architecture and urban planning.
Activities in the aspect of environmental geotechnics and reclamation mainly concern issues related to the assessment of the condition of the soil and water environment within waste landfills and adjacent areas, remediation of polluted areas, determination of parameters and modeling of pollution migration and assessment of the stability of engineering structures, taking into account the influence of atmospheric factors and assumptions of mechanics unsaturated land. The research carried out by employees is interdisciplinary and combines aspects of environmental geotechnics, environmental engineering and protection, environmental engineering, chemistry and hydrogeology, while outlining common research perspectives in these fields of science.
Activity in the field of geodesy and cartography focuses on conducting auditorium and field classes in geodesy with the use of classic and modern elements of geodetic equipment. The thematic scope of the course includes, among others, measurements and staking out using the polar and orthogonal methods as well as technical leveling of benchmarks.
Activities in the field of architecture and urban planning include issues related to architectural and urban design of contemporary urban and rural development. The research team is particularly interested in the subject of sustainable construction, the design of passive and ecological buildings and construction for agriculture.

International cooperation:
International cooperation at the Department of Revitalization and Architecture includes research exchange of researchers, maintaining contacts with foreign research units and participation in international conferences and scientific seminars.
In recent years, the staff has conducted scientific cooperation with domestic and foreign units as well as with the social and economic environment. This cooperation was related to the implementation of joint research topics in the field of assessing the degree of soil contamination in urban and post-industrial areas and in the area of communication routes. Cooperation was established with research centers in Valencia, Brno, Artvin, Durham, Nottingham and Melbourne. The department’s cooperation with foreign centers is expressed, inter alia, in cooperation on the basis of bilateral agreements, international research projects, COST actions, as well as bilateral exchange of teaching staff and students.
As part of international cooperation, the staff of the department also completed short-term teaching and training internships (University of Valencia, Agricultural University of Tirana, Bar Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Mendel University in Brno, Artvin Coruh University, IFA-Tulln, University of Cagliari), short-term experience exchange visits (University of Illinois at Chicago) and long-term research internships (Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Durham University, Univeristy of Nottingham, The University of Melbourne).
Currently, the department cooperates with scientists from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology on projects 09 / 18ITT-BGDDT and 5136 / QEBGDDT “Research on practical implication of AI solutions for sustainable land use, adapting climate change scenarios allowing prevention of natural disasters in northern Vietnam mountainous region”. Research projects carried out jointly are related to the analysis of the impact of climate change on the functioning of infrastructure and sustainable management of urban areas. The department’s employees are also involved in the implementation of the European COST Action CA18135-FIRElinks program, bringing together scientists from 37 European countries, which aims to create a fire protection system for natural areas. Last year, the staff of the department also collaborated on the MuMoLaDe (Multiscale Modeling of Landslides and Debris Flows) project, financed under the EC 7th Framework Program, Marie Curie ITN (Initial Training Networks). The aim of the project was to create a multidisciplinary system for the analysis of landslide mechanisms, using advanced computer techniques and physical models. The project brought together researchers, scientists and partners from 21 countries of the European Union.
Cooperation with business:
The employees of the Department of Revitalization and Architecture have qualifications and experience in developing reclamation projects for contaminated areas, including landfills. The team’s special qualifications include experience in the use of the observational method in the reclamation of old municipal waste landfills and numerical simulations of the processes taking place on reclaimed facilities (stability analysis including reinforcements, flow and transport modeling taking into account vertical isolation barriers), including the use of programs based on finite element method (ZSOIL, FEMWATER, MODFLOW).
RANGE OF SERVICES:
- Expertise and studies in the field of assessing the degree of soil and groundwater pollution;
- Land remediation and rehabilitation projects;
- Preparation of as-built documentation for the final acceptance of reclamation works.
The Department’s employees also deal with research and cooperation with business entities in the field of geodesy and cartography, engineering geodesy and mathematical cartography. With the use of geodetic equipment, it is possible to carry out measurements of the displacements of waste landfills, measurements of the displacements of historic objects or engineering structures and cartographic mapping.
